Do You Struggle with Depression and Anxiety?

Depression and anxiety can manifest physically through abdominal pain, headaches, trouble sleeping or sleeping too much, and difficulty with motor control. Emotional symptoms include:

  • Lethargy
  • Sadness
  • Guilt
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability

The cause of depression is unknown, but a predisposition to depression runs in families and can be caused by trauma or adverse life circumstances. Depression is more commonly diagnosed in women, and women tend to have different symptoms than men. Depression after giving birth is not unusual.

Depression and anxiety often reinforce each other, and people with depression often have difficulty concentrating on work or conversations. Some people may abuse alcohol or drugs or overeat to cope, leading to other medical problems. People with depression are at a higher risk of harming themselves than the general population.

Do You Suffer From PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD) is a condition that can arise after exposure to a traumatic event.

Symptoms include recurring, involuntary, and intrusive distressing memories of the event, flashbacks, and nightmares where one relives the trauma. Sufferers often report sleep disturbances, irritability, and heightened startle responses.  Avoidance of reminders of the trauma, emotional numbness, and withdrawal from social interactions are common.

People with PTSD may also experience negative thoughts about themselves or the world, and persistent feelings of fear, guilt, or shame. The intensity of these symptoms can vary and may persist for months or years, significantly impairing daily functioning.
